TN farmers ask PM to intervene in Cauvery issue
Sunday, November 2 2003 17:03 Hrs (IST)

Chennai: A farmers' union today (Nov 2) sought intervention of the Prime Minister A B Vajpayee to ensure that Tamil Nadu got its fair share of Cauvery waters immediately.

"In this connection the Prime Minister must immediately convene a meeting of Cauvery River Water Authority", a resolution adopted at the district office bearers meeting of Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Thozilalarkal Sangam (Tamil Nadu Farm Workers Union) held in Chennai, said.

The meeting also condemned the State Government's alleged failure to take appropriate action to obtain its share of Cauvery waters.

By another resolution, the union asked the State Government to issue 30 kgs of rice, through fair price shops, to farm workers rendered jobless due to the drought in Cauvery delta areas.

The meeting also sought withdrawal of the Government's decision not to issue rationed items to those whose income exceeded Rs 5,000 a month and issue of ration cards to those farm workers not possessing them.

In yet another resolution, the union wanted the Government to convene an all-party meeting to find solution to the vexed issue of holding local body polls in three reserved panchayats of Pappapatti, Keeripatti and Natarmangalam.
