Villagers pay back militants in their own coin
Sunday, November 2 2003 19:16 Hrs (IST)

Jammu: In a daring act, village defence committee (VDC) members repulsed a militant attack gunning down one of the ultras in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said today (November 2).

Militants swooped on a village in Arnas area last night and started firing indiscriminately, they said, adding the VDC members immediately took up positions and fired back.

The exchange of fire between the two sides continued for nearly two hours. Police later rushed to the scene and helped VDC members in warding off the attack.

One of the militants was killed in the retaliatory strike by VDC members, the officials said, adding the slain ultra was identified as Ghulam Nabi.

Police recovered an AK rifle, two magazines and three hand-grenades from the scene.
