Karunakaran challenges Antony; calls for a showdown
Sunday, November 2 2003 20:26 Hrs (IST)
Thiruvananthapuram: Refusing to be cowed down by Chief Minister A K Antony's challenge to his
detractors to prove their strength before the Governor, senior Congress leader K Karunakaran today
(Nov 2) said he had the numbers to bring down the Government and put an alternative in place.
"If Antony is courageous enough, let him call an Assembly session. He can remain in power if he has the
majority and the Assembly is the right place to prove that," Karunakaran told reporters in
Thiruvananthapuram.
Asserting that his faction 'will have its way,' Karunakaran held that it would be proved in the Assembly
that his group had the backing of more than 71 MLAs in the 140-member House.
The removal of Antony as Chief Minister was no longer the demand of the "I" faction alone, but that of
most UDF (United Democratic Front) constituents, he said.
The alternative government to follow would correct the mistakes of the present one by implementing the
poll promises of the UDF, he said.
Meanwhile, Kerala Congress (M) leader and Revenue Minister, K M Mani held a 30 minute talk with
Karunakaran in the latter's residence as part of Front partners effort to find a solution to the present
crisis.
