Khatami favours Iran-India-Afghan trilateral ties
Sunday, November 2 2003 19:26 Hrs (IST)
Dubai: Iranian President Mohammed Khatami has said tripartite cooperation among India, Iran and
Afghanistan can serve as a 'suitable example' for constructive cooperation in the region.
Accepting the credentials from newly appointed Indian Ambassador K C Singh at a formal ceremony in
Tehran yesterday (Nov 1), Khatami said his country's ties with India were time-tested and the
cooperation between the two would contribute to security in the region.
Fondly recalling his visit to India in January 2003, when he was the Chief Guest at the Republic Day
functions, Khatami said the two countries should strive to implement bilateral agreements at the earliest.
"India and Iran have left a deep imprint on each other in the domains of culture, literature and
philosophy. Cooperation between the two civilisations at this juncture in history contributes not only to
the development of the two countries but also strengthens peace and security in the region," Khatami
said.
The Iranian President expressed satisfaction over the measures taken by India and Pakistan to remove
tension and hoped the two countries would move towards peace and progress through negotiations.
