Guj clash: Indefinite curfew continues in Viramgam
Monday, November 3 2003 11:39 Hrs (IST)

Ahmedabad: Indefinite curfew in the communal violence-hit Viramgam town, about 60 kms from Ahmedabad, where three persons were killed and about 40 injured yesterday (Nov 2), continued for the second day even as police claimed the situation is totally peaceful and under control today (Nov 3).

"The situation is totally under control and no incident of violence has been reported since last 20 hours. There is no tension in the town, but curfew continues as a precautionary measure," Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Ahmedabad range, A K Sharma said.

Curfew was clamped in Viramgam after three persons were killed and 40 others injured when a former civic councillor Purushottam Jadhav allegedly fired at a mob after a local cricket match turned violent sparking off communal clashes.

Twenty-five persons from both communities have been arrested for their alleged role in the clashes, Sharma said, adding the 12 bore licensed gun along with four empty cartridges allegedly used by the "main culprit" – Jadhav – also arrested yesterday, has been recovered.

Giving details after investigations into the incident, the DIG said in the past also majority community persons had taken objection to the minority community youth playing cricket near the temple, as the "latter used to cause obstruction in their way".

"Jadhav, who reprimanded the boys after the ball went into the temple, was beaten up by them. Later he went to his house and returned armed with the weapon," Sharma said.

"He (Jadhav) fired from a close proximity, which resulted in large number of injuries," Sharma added.
