Setback to PWG: 32 naxals surrender to AP police
Monday, November 3 2003 18:35 Hrs (IST)

Hyderabad: In a major blow to naxalites movement in Andhra Pradesh, 32 naxals, including two commanders, today (Nov 3) surrendered before the Director General of Police (DGP) S R Sukumara in Hyderabad.

The ultras belonging to PWG (Peoples War Group), Praja Pratighatna and Janasakhti groups decided to surrender for various reasons including lack of public support, disillusionment with party ideology, ill- health and pressure from family members to join the mainstream, Sukumara told reporters.

As per the State Government's rehabilitation policy, the surrendered naxals would be provided financial assistance to enable them to live "honourable life", the DGP said.

After announcement of rehabilitation policy by the State Government in 1989, a total of 7,287 naxalites have surrendered to police, who have been rehabilitated, he said.

So far we have distributed over Rs 50.51 crore among the surrendered ultras as per their eligibility, Sukumara added.
