Ayodhya: Seer calls for 'out of court' settlement
Tuesday, November 4 2003 19:12 Hrs (IST)

Udupi: Sri Visvesha Thirtha Swamiji of Udupi Pejawar mutt today (Nov 4) expressed hope that the Ayodhya tangle could be solved through "out of court settlement" if all parties are able to get the support of Muslims for construction of temple at the birth place of Ram in Ayodhya and also that of the masjid in the undisputed 96-acre area near the temple.

Speaking to reporters, the Swamiji who mooted this proposal said while some Muslim leaders had consented to this, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had not agreed to the idea.

There is also a proposal to convene a meeting involving various political parties to find a solution to the vexed issue, he said.

"Ramjanmabhoomi and Ayodhya is not a political issue but an issue of the VHP," the Seer said.

While the ruling BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) had not extended its "full support" on the issue, it was the Congress, which had allowed Hindus to perform "Shilanyas" during late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's tenure, he pointed out.

He urged the Centre to come forward to convene a meeting of the Muslim leaders, take them into confidence and create a cordial atmosphere for the construction of Ram temple.

"I have personally met the Opposition leader Sonia Gandhi on the issue who has assured that she would think about this proposal positively. I am also continuing my efforts to meet various Muslim leaders in this regard," he said.
