Patna: In a bid to check growing tendency among its employees to demand hefty dowries, the Bihar
Government has amended the Bihar State Prohibition of Dowry Rules, 1998, making it mandatory for
Government servants getting married to give it in writing that they were not taking dowry.
The State Cabinet, which met today (November 4) evening, approved the new rules which require the
bride, the father and father-in-law of the groom to sign the document vouching for the truthfulness of the
Government servant's declaration.
The new rules envisage that the groom's parents would have to submit a list of gifts given to the couple
at the time of the marriage within a month of its solemnisation.
Cabinet Secretary Jayant Dasgupta said that according to the new rules, the district Welfare Officers
would henceforth also act as district Dowry Prohibition Officers and be vested with powers to investigate
dowry-related cases including recording of evidence.
