Antony camp braces to take Karunakaran head-on
Tuesday, November 4 2003 20:58 Hrs (IST)

Thiruvananthapuram: Gearing up to take the Karunakaran faction head-on, Congress groups loyal to Kerala Chief Minister A K Antony today (November 4) came out strongly in favour of the Government going for a trust vote to end the crisis gripping the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) by proving majority on the Floor of the House.

Antony supporter and UDF convener Oommen Chandy today said there was a strong view in the anti- Karunakaran camps that the option of calling the Assembly session to seek a confidence vote would be a way out.

However, it was for the Chief Minister to take a final decision after consulting the partners and getting high command clearance.

Antony, who is leaving for Delhi tomorrow (Nov 5) after a Cabinet meeting in the morning, is likely to discuss the confidence vote move with the high command, party sources said.

As the Antony camp continued their attack on Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPM) for attempts to topple the Government, leader of Kerala Congress-B and Transport Minister R Balakirshna Pillai held that the Opposition could not be blamed for trying to unsettle the Government as it was up to the UDF to set its house in order.

While UDF partners planned to meet in Thiruvananthapuram on November 7 to discuss the developments, Muslim League supremo Panakkad Syed Mohammadali Shihab Thangal said the party leaders were in touch with all the partners.
