Tuesday, November 4 2003 20:46 Hrs (IST)

Beijing: Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf today (Nov 4) held wide-ranging talks with China's new leaders, including Premier Wen Jiabao on bilateral ties and briefed them on the latest situation in South Asia.

Musharraf, on the second day of his three-day state visit to China, had separate meetings with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Wu Bangguo and the chairman of the Chinese People's Political Congress, Jia Qinglin, the State-run China Central Television reported.

Musharraf's meeting with Wen was the second in two days. The two leaders had met on the sidelines of the Boao forum for Asia annual meeting in South China's Hainan province during the weekend.

During today's meetings, Wen and other Chinese leaders told Musharraf that the new leadership of the Communist Party attaches great importance to Sino-Pakistani relations and will work with Pakistan to continuously push forward cooperation.

They recalled Chinese President Hu Jintao's meeting with Musharraf yesterday (Nov 3) and the signing of the joint statement that offered the guideline for bilateral relations in the new century.

Speaking highly of the Sino-Pakistani bilateral relations, the Chinese leaders expressed appreciation for Islamabad's support to Beijing on major issues concerning China's sovereignty and interests, sources said.

Musharraf said Pakistani people treasured the traditional friendship with Chinese people and that Islamabad will make concerted efforts with China to continuously promote the overall development of bilateral friendship and cooperation.

During the meeting, Musharraf said Pakistan is firmly opposed to terrorism and went on to reiterate his pledge not to allow anybody, including the terrorist force of "East Turkistan", to use the territory of Pakistan to carry out any form of anti-China activities.

Musharraf also said economic and trade cooperation between Pakistan and China had achieved remarkable results and will have broad prospects in the future.
