Washington: There is no ambiguity in the accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India and a plebiscite
there, as harped upon by Pakistan, would not be valid there, Pro-India Deomocratic Congressman
Frank Pallone has said.
"Contrary to claims made by Congressman (Dan) Burton and Kashmiri Secessionists, there is no legal
ambiguity regarding the accession of Jammu and Kashmir State to India," Pallone said at a briefing
organised by him over the weekend.
"Kashmir's last two elections were transparent and fair. If a plebiscite was held it is unlikely that
Kashmiris would vote for Pakistan," he said, responding to Pro-Pak
Congressman Burton's demand for holding a plebicisite in Jammu and Kashmir.
Pallone further went on to say, "over half a century ago, India requested the UN to force Pakistan to
withdraw from the region it occupied. The United Nations asked both India
and Pakistan to withdraw all military forces from Kashmir and to hold a plebiscite. Neither side withdrew
the troops and the United Nations now believes a plebiscite would no be valid."
