New Delhi: Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga telephoned Prime Minister Atal Bihari
Vajpayee who said India was "anxious" about the recent events in the island nation and hoped that
an "acceptable" solution to the current problems was found through internal political dialogue.
During the 20-minute conversation, Kumaratunga briefed Vajpayee on the latest political developments
in that country and expressed her support for continuation of the Norwegian-brokered peace process
with Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), official sources said.
Vajpayee informed the Sri Lankan President that India was anxious in regard to the recent political
developments there and urged that a Constitutional crisis should be averted, that the peace process
should not be disrupted and an acceptable solution to the current problems should emerge through
internal political dialogue, the sources said.
The telephonic conversation comes a day after Kumaratunga declared a state of emergency after
divesting key portfolios from three ministers and suspending Parliament.
Kumaratunga put off her four-day visit to India from tomorrow in view of the developments
