Friday, November 7 2003 22:47 Hrs (IST)

Islamabad: Pakistan today (Nov 7) said it has asked the British Government to clarify whether MI5 tried to bug its High Commission in London and if the operation had the official sanction.

"Pakistan has asked the British Government to clarify whether the MI5's attempts had the official sanction," Foreign Ministry spokesman Masood Khan said, reacting to London-based 'Sunday Times' report detailing the spying operation.

"We remain in touch with the British Government. It is important to know if such an operations was indeed authorised. We cannot go by the account of the newspaper reports," Khan has been quoted as saying by the official media in Islamabad.

Hoping that the British Government would clarify the matter soon, Khan said Pakistan has not received any response or information from the British Government so far.

"We are conducting an internal evaluation to determine if such an operation indeed took place," he said, adding that after the process is completed "we shall decide upon the future course of action".

He said Pakistan Government has made efforts to make sure that such an incident does not recur.

"We have already taken steps to ensure that the security of our High Commission is not breached or compromised in any manner."
