Forces not to be withdrawn along LoC: Gen Vij
Thursday, November 13 2003 14:42 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Army Chief General N C Vij today (November 13) said the forces would not be withdrawn from key border posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir and would continue to maintain stepped up vigil on the frontier with Pakistan.

"The forces will not be withdrawn from key heights along the border as there is no let up in attempts to push in terrorists from the other side," Vij told reporters on the sidelines of a function to mark the golden jubilee of Army Public School in New Delhi.

It is for the second year in running that Army would not withdraw troops from key border posts in Kupwara, Gurez, Dras and Kargil areas, as there are apprehensions that Pakistan might continue to push in terrorists during the harsh winter months.

Vij remained non-committal to a question whether the Government had taken a decision to appoint Chief of Defence Staff. He also refused to comment on reports that India had set up a military base in Ayni near Tajikistan capital Dushanbe where it might station troops.
