Unemployment still a problem in China: Gujral
Wednesday, November 19 2003 19:51 Hrs (IST)

Kolkata: China may have made a mark by attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), but unemployment is still a major problem in that country, former Prime Minister I K Gujral said today (Nov 19).

Gujral, who recently visited Macao, Hong Kong and Shanghai, however had a lot of praise for China and its economy.

"We are always very moved about our diverse society, but they (Chinese) are far more diverse," he said while addressing members of Merchants' Chamber of Commerce (MCC) in Kolkata.

"I had first visited China in 1993 along with Atal Bihari Vajpayee in different circumstances, but this time I went on a different mission and had the opportunity to see three important places," he said.

He said it appeared that growing influence of the USA in the Middle East was looked upon by China as an opportunity to tap those markets in future.

Referring to discussions with Mayor of Shanghai, he said they were considering changing their population policy, as one child norm was creating some problems.
