Thursday, November 20 2003 15:03 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: Six children were injured when a shell they were playing with, exploded in Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said in Srinagar today (Nov 20).

The children, aged between 8-10 years, were playing cricket in Dangiwacha forest area at Rafiabad in the district last evening (Nov 19) when they found the unexploded shell and started fiddling with it.

The shell went off, injuring six children, sources said, adding four of them were shifted to SMHS Hospital and the other two were being treated at the District Hospital, Baramulla.

Dangiwacha, adjacent to Handwara in frontier district of Kupwara, has witnessed quite a few encounters recently. The forest area, having many caves, has been extensively used by militants as hideouts to store arms, ammunition and ration, the sources mentioned.
