Violence abates; Assam limping back to normalcy
Friday, November 21 2003 22:46 Hrs (IST)

Guwahati: After a week of anti-Bihari violence which claimed 32 lives, the situation in Assam was by and large peaceful today (Nov 21) with no major incident reported.

The State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the situation had improved considerably with no "report of any serious incident from any part since last night".

"Following directives to the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police to stop violence within 24 hours, the situation is fast returning to normal," Gogoi told reporters.

An official spokesman said there was no report of violence in the five districts of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh in Upper Assam and Nalbari, Dhubri and Bongaigaon in Lower Assam.

The Army continued to stage flag marches in worst-hit Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts to restore confidence among the people, the spokesman said.
