Gujarat Congress welcomes SC stay of riot trials
Friday, November 21 2003 21:00 Hrs (IST)
Ahmedabad: Congress today (Nov 21) welcomed the Supreme Court's order staying the trial
proceedings in 10 cases that occurred during the post-Godhra communal violence last year.
Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Hasmukh Patel said the "decision of the Supreme
Court was itself a sign that there was miscarriage of justice in riot cases in the State and both the police
and investigating agency had failed in its duty."
Patel said Gujarat Congress has urged Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani to initiate an independent
probe into the allegations made by Chief Minister Narendra Modi recently during an election rally
that "Madhya Pradesh Government had not given security cover for kar sevaks when the train passed
through the state in February last year."
Gujarat Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ashok Bhatt said he could comment on the apex court's
decision only after they received all documents pertaining to the order.
