Guwahati: Assam was calm but tense with no overnight major incident of anti-Bihari onslaught by United
Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) militants. Security was heightened, as Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)
leader Laloo Prasad Yadav would today (Nov 24) assess the situation.
Home Commissioner K D Tripathi told reporters in Guwahati today that the night was calm with no
incident reported so far.
Laloo Prasad Yadav, leading an eight-member Parliamentary delegation, was coming on a goodwill
mission to instil confidence and a sense of security among the people from Bihar.
Stringent security measures were in place to prevent further outbreak of violence against Biharis in the
state that erupted following the attack on Assamese train passengers in
Bihar, Tripathi said.
Isolated cases of burning of abandoned Bihari huts, intimidation and physical assaults were, however,
reported from different parts of the state.
The security measures have been further heightened in view of the visit of the RJD supremo to the city
as the ULFA militants seemed to strike whenever major leaders visited the state, sources said.
Patrolling by the Army, paramilitary forces and police was on in the vulnerable areas, particularly in the
Bihari dominated places to foil any attempts of ultras at violence, sources said.
People in the Bihari settlements were spending sleepless nights of tension and were keeping vigil
against the attempts by miscreants from taking advantage of the situation to
harass them.
