Gogoi says ULFA behind violence; Laloo blames BJP

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today (Nov 24) apprised Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)
supremo Laloo Prasad Yadav that the Biharis killed in Assam was not due to mob violence but were
targeted by the banned United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA).
''The ULFA has an anti-Hindi stance and this was evident from the ban against Hindi films announced by
them before the outbreak of the ongoing violence,'' the Chief Minister told Yadav during a closed-door
luncheon meeting at his residence in Khanapara.
Gogoi categorically pointed out that the ULFA was exclusively responsible for the ongoing violence and
the State did not have adequate forces to check insurgency.
The State requires 180 companies of paramilitary forces but had only 110 companies and even out of
that 21 companies were sent out for election duties elsewhere.
''Inspite of repeated insistence by the State Government, only 12 companies of paramilitary forces have
been sent to the State during the last few days,'' he added.
Gogoi assured Yadav that prompt measures had been taken by the State Government to defuse the
tension between the two communities and restore normalcy in the State.
Confidence-building measures had been undertaken with peace rallies organised at different places and
Gogoi also apprised the RJD chief of the various relief and rehabilitation measures taken up for helping
the affected people, a Government spokesman said.
Meanwhile, Laloo squarely blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena for inciting
communal passion in Bihar leading to violence in Assam.
"A BJP MP sat in a dharna after train passengers from Assam were attacked in Katihar with support from
the Shiv Sena which created unnecessary tension and subsequent violence against Biharis in Assam,"
Yadav told a press conference.
When asked to comment on the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RSS) chief's remark that the Bangladeshis were
behind the massacre, the RJD MP shot back saying they always had a tendency to blame either
Pakistan or Bangladesh for problems in the Northeast region.
"If this is the case what was the Intelligence Bureau doing? Why was Parliament attacked and why did
Kargil intrusion take place?" he asked.
"Please separate election agenda with sensitive affairs like this but the BJP is not getting the message,"
Yadav said after meeting the Chief Minister and representatives of the All Assam Students Union
(AASU).
