Thursday, November 27 2003 22:45 Hrs (IST)

Kokrajhar: Two Army jawans allegedly raped a mentally retarded girl and an Army regiment based at Sapekta in Assam's Kokrajhar district later overran the police outpost in the area for having registered an FIR (first information report) against the jawans, official sources said today (Nov 27).

The jawans, from the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry based at Sapekta, reportedly went to the residence of a private medical practitioner Lonkeswar Koch of Matiapara under Gossaigaon sub-division last night (Nov 26).

Finding the girl alone in the house, they raped her repeatedly for three hours before Koch along with the villagers arrived and later filed an FIR with the Sapekata police outpost, police said.

The Army regiment coming to know of the FIR gheraoed the police outpost and ransacked it today.

Police registered a criminal case against the two jawans.

The Gossaigaon SDO Alok Kumar Saharia said a magisterial inquiry had been ordered into the incident and the report was to be submitted within three days.

The Army GOC Major General K K Kohli, who visited the spot along with the district superintendent of police and other top officials today, said the Army would hold an inquiry and action would be taken if the jawans were found guilty.

The incident created tension in the area. More than 200 people belonging to various communities and organisations such as the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), All Bodo Women Welfare Tribe, the Adivasis and Rabhas staged a protest march.

Meanwhile, the ABSU, Bodo People's Action Committee and the All Bodo Women's Welfare Federation submitted a memorandum condemning the incident to the Chief Minister through the Kokrajhar deputy commissioner.
