Jayalalithaa on water mission to AP; meets Naidu
Friday, November 28 2003 20:23 Hrs (IST)
Hyderabad: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today (Nov 28) met her Andhra Pradesh
counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu and made a personal request for release of three TMC of water from
Kandaleru reservoir to meet drinking water requirement of Chennai city.
"I have come all the way here to request the Chief Minister (Naidu) to permit pumping of water from the
dead storage of Kandaleru reservoir to tide over water crisis in Chennai," Jayalalithaa told reporters
after an hour-long meeting with Naidu at Secretariat in Hyderabad.
Asked about Naidu's response to her request, she said, "He said he will consider the request and get
back to us in a couple of days."
During the meeting, Jayalalithaa explained to Naidu the precarious water supply situation in Chennai in
the wake of continuous drought for the last four years and made out a case for drawing of water from
Kandaleru reservoir in Nellore district to tide over the crisis.
Andhra Pradesh Major Irrigation Minister K Srihari told reporters that the Government would assess
water availability and requirements in the State before responding to Tamil Nadu's request.
"As of now, there is a dead storage of four TMC in Kandaleru reservoir. We also have several
commitments. After examining our requirements, we will be able to say yes or no to their (Tamil Nadu's)
request," Srihari said.
