Friday, November 28 2003 20:41 Hrs (IST)

Lisbon: Underworld don Abu Salem, wanted by India in connection with several murder and extortion cases, and his girlfriend, Monica Bedi, were today (Nov 28) sentenced to imprisonment after a Portuguese court found them guilty of forgery and entering Portugal illegally.

The Portuguese court sentenced Salem to four-and-a-half years of imprisonment and Bedi to two years, highly placed CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) sources in Delhi said.

Salem has been found guilty on three counts -- entering the country with forged documents, obstructing government servants from performing their duty and perjury.

Bedi has been held guilty of entering Portugal with forged documents and using a forged document to stay on in that country.
