Madrid: At least seven Spanish intelligence officers were killed today (Nov 29, 2003) in an attack South of Baghdad, Spanish television CNN+ quoted military officials in Baghdad as saying.

The Defence Ministry in Madrid confirmed an attack had taken place, according to Spanish national radio, but was awaiting further details on the attack as well as possible casualties before giving further information.

In Baghdad, a spokesman for the Spanish contingent in Iraq said, "Eight agents from the Spanish national intelligence service, who were in two cars, were attacked in the South of Baghdad and there are victims."

"We fear the worst," Luis Estevez, said, without giving casualty figures.

Spanish radio reported that the attack was carried out with mortars and grenades and occurred around 30 km South of Baghdad.

The Spanish Defence Ministry went into a crisis meeting after news of the attack, the Ministry said.

Radio Cadena Ser reported that the Ministry was in the process of contacting the families of those believed killed or wounded in the ambush.

Three helicopters from the Spanish contingent were at the scene of the ambush and witnesses said that two vehicles were on fire and that two unidentified bodies were seen at the side of the road, CNN+ reported.
