Raid in Mumbai unearths old coins and stamps

Mumbai: Hours after the seizure of fake currency from a Nasik bungalow, police raided a bungalow at
Panvel in Navi Mumbai, allegedly owned by Prasoon Agarwal and found 426 small boxes containing old,
used stamps and coins from various countries.
"The bungalow belonged to Prasoon Agarwal alias Abay Bansal, whose bungalow in Nasik was raided
yesterday and found 426 small boxes containing used stamps and old coins," police said today (Dec 2,
2003).
Based on a tip off, the raid was conducted at around midnight, following which the police broke open the
unoccupied house, police said.
Whether the collections were original or fake is yet to be ascertained, police told reporters.
Earlier, police raided a bungalow in Nasik yesterday and seized 90-100 cartons containing currencies of
several countries, including Pakistan, Somalia and Brazil, after a
sting operation by a television channel unearthed the currency dump.
The city police raided the Padma bungalow and found 90-100 cartons containing foreign currencies,
police commissioner P T Lohar said.
After opening five to six boxes, police found foreign currencies of countries like Pakistan, Brazil,
Czechoslovakia, Argentina and Somalia, besides some Indian currency notes of various denominations,
he said.
Police summoned officials of the State Bank of India, India Security Press and Currency Note Press to
identify the currency, Lohar said adding further investigations were on.
