K'taka Cabinet to decide on location of court for Jaya
Wednesday, December 3 2003 19:35 Hrs (IST)
Bangalore: The Special Court to try two disproportionate assets cases against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
J Jayalalithaa would be set up in Bangalore on the Supreme Court direction subject to the Cabinet's
approval at its meeting tomorrow (Dec 4), Law Minister D B Chandregowda said today (Dec 3).
Speaking to reporters, he said he has asked the Director General of Police, Home Secretary, IG,
Director of Prosecution and the PWD department to find a suitable place for location of the court.
From the security point of view, he said, the Government felt that Parappana Agrahara central jail would
be the "best place" for the location of the court as Jayalalithaa was
placed in the "Z" category of security. "We have to take note of these things (security)".
Chandregowda said subject to the approval of the Karnataka High Court Chief Justice N K Jain, the
Public Prosecutor to conduct the cases would be decided. "I have asked the Advocate General to get a
competent Public Prosecutor".
To a query, he emphasised, "we are not doing it (setting up of the special court) on our own but on the
direction of the Supreme Court."
The Supreme Court had on November 18 transferred two disproportionate assets cases against
Jayalalithaa and four others from a Chennai special court to Bangalore and directed the Karnataka
Government to appoint a special judge within a month.
