Sporadic violence mars re-poll in three States
Wednesday, December 3 2003 21:22 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: Moderate to heavy polling was recorded today (Dec 3) in the re-poll at 166 polling stations
spread across three States as sporadic violence marred the exercise in Madhya Pradesh where a local
Congress leader was killed and naxalites set off landmine blasts and clashed with police in Chhattisgarh.
Re-polling at 41 booths of Rajasthan, however, was peaceful and recorded 70-75 per cent turnout, the
highest among the three States, followed by Madhya Pradesh (over 65 per cent) and Chhattisgarh (40
per cent).
In dacoit-infested Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh, a Panchayat official Kamal Singh Bhadoria, said to
be a confidant of Congress candidate from Ater, Satyadev Katare, was gunned down by unidentified
assailants at Gyanpura village, police said.
Re-polling at 66 booths in the State was by and large peaceful barring stray clashes between Congress
and BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) supporters, which left about half-a-dozen people injured.
In Chhattisgarh, re-polling in majority of the 60-odd polling stations was hit by naxalite violence as ultras
triggered landmine blasts in four places and engaged police in encounter at six places.
An estimated 75 per cent polling was reported from a booth in Marwahi constituency, where Chief
Minister Ajit Jogi is pitted against leader of Opposition Anand Kumar Sai. Re-polling here was peaceful.
Not a single vote was cast at a village in Narayanpur constituency as naxalites forced out all the
residents.
