Thursday, December 4 2003 12:35 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) appeared headed for a landslide victory in Madhya Pradesh
and Rajasthan wresting power from Congress, which is locked in a neck-and-neck fight in Chhattisgarh
while retaining Delhi.
Riding an anti-incumbency wave, BJP looked like securing a two-thirds majority in 230-member Madhya
Pradesh Assembly which Chief Minister Digvijay Singh admitted was a "wave against" the party and the
Government.
BJP was leading in 146 seats, Congress in 51 and others in 24. Among the winners in Madhya Pradesh
were BJP's Himmat Kothari (Ratlam town) and Vijay Shah (Harsud) and Congress' Premchand Guddu
(Alot) and Prabhudayal Gehlot (Sailana).
In an impressive performance in Rajasthan, the saffron party was way ahead with a lead in 116 of the
200 seats against Congress' 60. Others led in 21 constituencies.
BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate Vasundhara Raje and Chief Minister Ashok Ghelot were leading in
Jhalrapatan and Sardarpura constituencies respectively. Former Chief Minister Shiv Charan Mathur and
three Congress ministers were trailing.
Congress is all set to retain power in the national capital Delhi where the party is leading way ahead of
BJP. Out of the 14 results declared so far Congress has bagged 11 and BJP three in the 70-member
House. Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit and BJP leader Madan Lal Khurana were among the prominent
winners.
