New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh today (Dec 4) accepted defeat in the
Assembly elections saying it was virtually a wave against his party and Government and vote for a
change.
"I had said, if there is a wave, it will be difficult for us. It appears there was a wave," he said conceding
that he had failed to feel the pulse of the people.
Singh reiterated that he will not accept any party post including the leadership of Congress Legislature
Party for 10 years in the wake of the defeat.
Asked whether he had underestimated his BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) rival Uma Bharti, Singh denied
having made such an assessment. "I did not underestimate (Uma Bharti). It went the other way because
too much of personality was involved. It was a vote for a change."
He said he would sit in the Opposition and discharge his responsibility in the Assembly.
"I did (fail to read the pulse of people). The feedback we got went wrong," Singh said admitting the
people's anger against his party's failure in providing electricity and roads costed the polls.
Singh, who ruled Madhya Pradesh for 10-years, said, "I had said that if defeated I will not accept any
party post for next 10 years. I stand by it. I will work as an ordinary party worker and work for bringing it
to power in Delhi."
He indicated that there would be a change even in the State party leadership saying, "People have
voted for change in Government and party and there should be change."
Asked if his 'soft Hindutva' had failed, he said, "There is nothing like soft Hindutva. We are religious but
not fundamentalist."
