Kerala Assembly by-poll; UDF retains Thiruvalla

Pathanamthitta: The ruling Congress-led UDF (United democratic Front) today retained the Thiruvalla
Assembly seat, with Elizabeth Mammen Mathai of the Kerala Congress (Mani) defeating her nearest LDF
(Left Democratic Front) rival, Verghese George of the Janata Dal (S) by a margin of over 5,000 votes.
The by-poll was necessitated by the death of Elizabeth Mamen's husband, Mammen Mathai of the
Kerala Congress (M).
