Recent peace measures just a beginning: Musharraf
Thursday, December 4 2003 13:27 Hrs (IST)
Islamabad: President Pervez Musharraf has said the recent measures taken by India and Pakistan to
normalise relations were only a "start" to resolve outstanding issues, including Kashmir and the two
countries should begin the dialogue process to address main issues.
Briefing Ambassadors of Western countries in Islamabad last night (Dec 3), he claimed Pakistan has
taken "positive" steps in recent weeks by announcing a unilateral ceasefire and by lifting the ban on
over-flights.
These steps by both countries could only be regarded as a start leading to a dialogue between Pakistan
and India on all outstanding issues, including Kashmir, official media quoted him as saying.
Lasting peace in the region was neither sustainable nor possible without a just settlement of the Jammu
and Kashmir issue, he told western diplomats, while rejecting allegations of cross border terrorism from
Pakistan.
Referring to the recent ban on the militant outfits, Musharraf said Pakistan remained firmly committed to
the global fight against terrorism.
