Infiltration into Kashmir must end: UK envoy
Tuesday, December 9 2003 20:07 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Britain today (Dec 9, 2003) said infiltration to Kashmir should end and it will work with India in the global fight against terrorism.

"We believe terrorism should be curtailed. We feel infiltration into Kashmir must end. But this is an area in which both India and Pakistan have their own bilateral dialogue going and we are cautious about getting drawn into more details," new British High Commissioner to India Michael Arthur told Hindi daily 'Dainik Bhaskar'.

Arthur said as High Commissioner, he has listed out eight major areas of priority. "Our top priority will be to pursue the fight against terrorism. Both the British and the Indian Government are absolutely clear about the need to work together in this area."

He, however, did not give details about the seven other priority areas.

On Britain's position of India getting a permanent seat in the UN Security Council, Arthur said, "We strongly believe that India and some other countries like Germany and Japan should be made permanent members.

"This is easier said than done because this would require a change in the charter of the United Nations."

On India's demand for removal of subsidies in agriculture, he said, "There is a debate within Britain and Europe. Frankly, it does not make sense economically for our Governments to offer such a high degree of protectionism."
