London: Britain will introduce a compulsory citizenship ceremony for immigrants from next year, for which
they will have to pay 68 Pounds, in a function that must have singing of the National Anthem and
presence of the British flag Union Jack.
Home Secretary David Blunkett, who is scheduled to attend the first citizenship ceremony to be held in
Brent, North London, wants key elements of the ceremonies to be the Union Jack, the singing of 'God
Save the Queen' and a reading of an oath of loyalty to the Queen and Britain's democratic way of life.
Migrants wanting to become British citizens will pay fees of up to 218 Pounds, including 68 Pounds for
the compulsory ceremony. Hard-up applicants may be able to pay the fee in instalments.
According to a Home Office consultation paper on the format of the ceremonies, a minority of
respondents objected to national symbols, including some who said the Union Jack was too closely
associated with the British National Party.
Beverley Hughes, the Immigration Minister said, "Becoming a UK citizen is an important step and we want
to welcome new citizens with the right balance of solemnity and celebration to make it a significant day
for all involved.
"I believe it is only right – and indeed what new citizens themselves will want – that our National Flag and
National Anthem should be part of this important day alongside appropriate symbols of the local
community."
