Hurriyat asks Centre to declare ceasefire in JK
Wednesday, December 10 2003 20:17 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: The Hurriyat Conference led by Maulana Abbas Ansari today (Dec 10, 2003) suggested the Centre declare ceasefire within Jammu and Kashmir, saying such an action would prove its sincerity in seeking a resolution of Kashmir issue.

"We welcome the ceasefire between India and Pakistan along the borders and see it as a major step towards restoration of peace. But the need is to extend the ceasefire along the border in Jammu and Kashmir to within the State," Ansari said while addressing at a seminar organised at Hurriyat headquarters here to mark the World Human Rights Day.

Ansari said if the Government of India was sincere in resolution of Kashmir issue, then it will extend the ceasefire to within the State also.

He urged the international community to ensure that India abides by International Human Rights and puts an end to alleged State-sponsored terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Hurriyat chairman also called for a composite and result-oriented dialogue for resolution of Kashmir issue according to the wishes and aspirations of Kashmiri people.

"Violence begets violence and is destructive in any case. The issues, whatever the nature be, have to be resolved through dialogue process," he added.

Several other leaders, including People's Conference chairman Sajad Gani Lone, Aga Abdul Hussain, Fazl Haq Qureshi and Shahi Dul Islam addressed the seminar.
