No question of repealing POTA, says Centre
Sunday, December 14 2003 19:05 Hrs (IST)

Chennai: The Union Minister of State for Home I D Swamy today (Dec 14, 2003) said that there was no question of repealing Prevention of Teerrorism Act (POTA), as demanded by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), one of the constituents of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

He told reporters at the Meenambakkam airport that only POTA could curb the terrorist activities in the country.

Due to the misuse of the Act, the Government had come forward with an amendment to POTA, giving more powers to the POTA Review Committee, he said.

He said the petition submitted by the MPs of the DMK, PMK (Pattali Makkal Katchi) and the MDMK (Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the misuse of POTA for arrest of MDMK chief Vaiko had been forwarded to the POTA Review Committee, which was expected to take an early action.
