Monday, December 15 2003 10:50 Hrs (IST)
United Nations: Describing the capture of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein as an "important
event", United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan said it offers an opportunity to give "fresh impetus
to search for peace and stability" in the war-torn country.
In a statement today morning (Dec 15, 2003), Annan reiterated the readiness of the United Nations to
do "everything possible to help Iraqis, if asked and as circumstances permit".
"The Secretary General considers that the capture of Saddam Hussein, the epitome of the former
regime, is an important event," his spokesman Fred Eckhard said in a statement.
"It offers an opportunity to give fresh impetus to the search for peace and stability in Iraq, on the basis of
an inclusive and fully transparent process," he said.
