Opposition least concerned about national unity: BJP

New Delhi: Claiming that Congress and other parties were opposing Prevention of Terrorism Act
(POTA) "purely for the sake of vote bank politics", the BJP today (Dec 17, 2003) accused them of not
being concerned about unity, sovereignty and integrity of the nation.
"Despite Supreme Court verdict supporting POTA, Congress and other Opposition parties are
demanding repeal of the legislation. They are more interested in vote bank politics and not concerned
about unity, sovereignty and integrity of the nation," party spokesman V K Malhotra said.
POTA was needed to fight the menace of terrorism since the existing laws were not sufficient to tackle
this problem, which has spread all over the world, he said.
While on one hand Congress speaks of Supreme Court verdict on the Ayodhya issue, on the other it
opposes verdicts given in favour of Uniform Civil Code, issue of saffronisation of education and now
POTA, Malhotra said.
"Whatever doesn't suit the party, it opposes such issues lock, stock and barrel," he said.
