US condemns assassination bid on Musharraf
Wednesday, December 17 2003 10:15 Hrs (IST)

Washington: Condemning the weekend assassination bid on Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, the United States has said the incident shows that the war on terror continues and must be confronted everywhere.

"The United States strongly condemns this attack against Pakistan's President. His country is one of our closest allies in the global war on terror," the State Department said in a written reply to a question.

White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said the assassination attempt on Musharraf was another indication that the war on terrorism continues and must be confronted everywhere.

Asked whether Bush was aware of the assassination attempt on Musharraf, McClellan responded, "Yes – fully briefed on all those matters and those situations that occur around the world.

"President Musharraf is someone that has worked very closely with us on the war on terrorism, and it's another indication that that war continues and we must confront it everywhere. And that's what we are doing with our global coalition partners."

Five high intensity explosive devices were detonated over a bridge in Rawalpindi just seconds after Musharraf's motorcade passed over it on Sunday (Dec 14, 2003).
