Dhaka: Bangladesh has sealed its borders to prevent Indian separatists entering the country after a
crackdown by Bhutan on rebel camps in its territory, the official BSS news agency said today (Dec 18,
2003).
"The Bangladesh Government has taken the decision of sealing its borders, which is consistent with its
policy of not allowing its territories to be used by any insurgent against any country," the agency said,
quoting reliable sources.
Bhutan does not directly border Bangladesh, but there were concerns that the fleeing rebels might seek
refuge in Bangladesh.
Bhutan Monday (Dec 15) launched its first-ever modern military operation to evict three Indian separatist
rebel groups that have set up illegal bases in the South of the country.
Upto 120 Indian rebels have been killed by the Bhutanese Army during the operation.
