India, Pak agree to resume Samjhauta Express

New Delhi: India and Pakistan today (Dec 19, 2003) agreed to resume Samjhauta Express train service between the two countries from January 15.

An agreement to this effect was signed between officials of the two sides in New Delhi after two-days of talks.

The existing agreement relating to rail communication between India and Pakistan valid till January 20, 2004, has been extended to a further period of three years till January 20, 2007, a joint statement issued at the end of the talks said.

"Samjhauta Express and freight services will resume with effect from January 15, 2004 as per the earlier timetable. The fare structure will be announced shortly," it said.
