India plays down Musharraf's offer on Kashmir

New Delhi: In a lukewarm response to President Pervez Musharraf's statement on Kashmir, India tonight
(Dec 19, 2003) said if it reflected any change or modification in Pakistan's position it would always be
ready to welcome it.
"We have always suggested flexibility. It is Pakistan which has been very rigid. It is Pakistan which keeps
talking about the centrality of that (Kashmir) issue," External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha told
reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS).
He was responding to a question about Musharraf's statement that Pakistan was ready to leave aside
UN resolution on Kashmir and favoured flexibility by both sides and meeting halfway for a solution to the
issue.
Sinha said, "If there is any change or modification in Pakistan's position, that is something which India
will always be ready to welcome."
The CCS meeting reviewed the ground situation in Jammu and Kashmir and along the Line of Control
after the ceasefire on the Indo-Pak border.
