Monday, December 22 2003 19:23 Hrs (IST)

Panery (Indo-Bhutan border): Apart from losing a large number of cadres, the ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) and NDFB (National Democratic Front of Bodoland) had to dispense with a huge amount of arms and ammunition during the ongoing Army offensive against the outfit and Kamtapur Liberation Army (KLO) in Bhutan.

As per the list given by the Bhutan Government to its Indian counterpart, more than 700 types of assorted weapons have been so far seized from the camps which were busted in the jungles, according to official sources.

As many as 500 AK-47 rifles, over 100 pistols and other sophisticated weapons as anti-aircraft guns, 60 mm mortars, SLRs besides 150,000 rounds of ammunition and 80,000 rounds of AK series ammunition, were seized from the camps.

Though the exact number of casualties were neither given by the Bhutan authorities nor by the Indian Army, it was estimated that more than 160 militants had been killed in the Himalayan kingdom since December 13 last, sources said.

Most of the killed were reported to be fresh recruits in their late teens or early 20s, sources added.

The Bhutan Government in the meantime in a letter has informed their Indian counterpart details about the last meeting it had with the ULFA on November 22 and 23 where they were requested for the last time to leave the country.

The ULFA was represented by "foreign secretary" Sasha Choudhury, Asanta Baghphukan and ideologue Bhimkanta Buragohain.
