| | Delhi to be made a modern 'global city': Lt Governor Monday, December 22 2003 18:50 Hrs (IST) New Delhi:
Vowing to make Delhi a "modern global city", Lt Governor Vijai Kapoor today (Dec 22, 2003) said the new State Government would pursue the issue of Statehood in its efforts to ensure fulfilment of basic needs, rights and entitlements of each citizen.
Addressing the New Delhi Assembly, Kapoor outlined power, water and transport services as being among the Government's priorities in its pursuit of "development with a human face" with active partnership of citizens.
"A modern global city is the immediate agenda of my Government. A city that all Indians can be proud of," he said adding up scaling infrastructure is the topmost priority while
consolidating earlier achievements.
He said the Government proposed to set up large gas-based power plants at Bawana and Indraprastha in Delhi to reduce the capital's dependence on Northern Grid and other sources.
To enhance drinking water availability, the Government proposes to make 140 million gallon tonnes (MGD) Sonia Vihar project functional by summer of 2004 besides completing 20 MGD plant under construction in Bawana and 90 MGD water canal that will bring water from Haryana, the Lt Governor said.
Pointing out that for becoming a global city, Delhi needed to have a world-class network of roads with modern public transport system, he said a proposal was under consideration to introduce High Capacity Urban Buses and Electric Trolley Buses to supplement the road-based mass transit system.
