| | US to assist Pak in probing assassination bid Monday, December 22 2003 20:26 Hrs (IST) Islamabad:
The US would be sending a team of investigators this week to assist Pakistani security agencies in probing the recent attempt on the life of President Pervez Musharraf by Islamic militants and stepping up security for him.
The US team would examine the bridge blasted by the militants through remote-controlled bombs seconds after Musharraf's convoy had passed on Dec 14, 2003 and help in the probe currently being carried out by Pakistan's security agencies, official sources here said.
Militants exploded 250 kgs of C-4 plastic explosives beneath the road bridge located a stone throw from Pakistan's 10 Army Corps headquarters in Rawalpindi.
Primary investigations by Pakistan security agencies revealed that Musharraf's convoy escaped the blast due to electronic jammers, which delayed the explosions by less than a minute. The local investigators have established that the bombs were ignited by a remote control device placed quite far from the bridge.
Those who planted the high security bridge knew the exact time of arrival of Musharraf's plane from Karachi at the nearby Chaklala military airbase and probably could see his convoy approaching the bridge when they activated the remote control device.
The US team was expected to assist in analysing the crucial clues and re-evaluate Musharraf's security in the light of threats from al-Qaida as well as banned local militant groups.
