'Karnataka ready with special court for Jaya trial' Wednesday, December 24 2003 18:07 Hrs (IST) Bangalore:
The Karnataka Government has set up a special court in the city to try two disproportionate assets cases against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, even as the Supreme Court reserved ruling on her petition seeking transfer of the trial from the State to Pondicherry.
"We are going as per the direction of the Supreme Court. A notification establishing the special court in the city civil court complex has already been issued," State Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs D B Chandregowda told reporters in Bangalore.
The Government had already forwarded a list of judges and advocates to the high court Chief Justice N K Jain for appointing judge, public prosecutor and an assistant prosecutor to conduct the trail, he said.
Gowda said the Government had also filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court replying to the issues raised by Jayalalithaa in her application seeking transfer of trail from Karnataka to Pondicherry, besides denying her allegations that there was no conducive atmosphere in the state for conducting the trial.
The Government had also informed the apex court of the steps taken by the State for conducting the trial, he said.
Jayalalithaa need not have any apprehensions over her safety, Gowda said.
