US stiffens crackdown on Pak-based terror groups
Wednesday, December 24 2003 11:48 Hrs (IST)

Washington: The US has stiffened its crackdown on main terrorist groups, Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), now active in Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir.

Significantly, US authorities have also targeted alternate names the groups have used in a bid to evade action.

Washington originally had designated LeT and JeM as terrorist groups under US law in October 2001, during its campaign against global terrorism.

Both the groups have been blamed for attacks in J & K. India has also consistently accused these groups of involvement in an attack on the Parliament on Dec 13, 2002.

The 36 groups designated by the United States as Foreign Terrorist Organisations face a range of sanctions, including a travel ban on their members entering the United States.

Americans are also prohibited from forming any economic relationships with members of targeted groups, which are liable to have their assets in US financial institutions frozen.

"As we carry on the global campaign against terrorism, we hope this list will help to isolate these terrorist organisations, to choke off their sources of financial support, and to prevent their members' movement across international borders," said State Department spokesman Richard Boucher.
