| | Cong must go in for alliance: Mukherjee Committee Friday, December 26 2003 14:54 Hrs (IST) New Delhi:
Congress should go in for immediate alliance at the national level with like-minded parties to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led coalition, which could go in for early Lok Sabha polls.
A recommendation to this effect has been made by the Pranab Mukherjee Committee, constituted by Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the wake of the party's debacle in the recent Assembly elections, party sources said.
Similar views were aired at the Congress' Simla conclave a few months ago where party leaders had called for coming together of all progressive and secular forces to defeat BJP.
However, the party did not pay any attention to the issue of alliances in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, sources said.
Senior leader Arjun Singh, who had suggested the need for firming up alliances in states at various levels much before the polls, had come under attack from All India Congress Committee (AICC) itself.
The Mukherjee Committee has sought to put the blame on the former Chief Ministers for the recent poll debacle by pointing out that they were given a free hand in selection of candidates, on the issue of alliances as also in campaigning, party sources said.
The committee has also pointed out faults in the feedback system between AICC and the states, which is apparently aimed at putting the blame on AICC office bearers for the failure of communication.
