| | Bid on Musharraf's life: One assassin identified Friday, December 26 2003 16:30 Hrs (IST) Islamabad:
Three suicide bombers were involved in yesterday's (Dec 25, 2003) assassination bid on President Pervez Musharraf one of whom has been identified even as investigators got "important clues" about the terrorists behind the attack.
Security forces have been put on high alert throughout the capital and neighbouring garrison town of Rawalpindi, where Musharraf escaped unhurt in a second bid on his life within a fortnight, in view of the three-day SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Summit beginning on January 4.
Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali said the Summit would be held as scheduled.
"The bodies of three suicide bombers have been found and one has been identified. But for security reasons, the identity cannot be disclosed," Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat told the Senate today (Dec 26).
Information Minister Sheikh Rashid had said yesterday that two suicide bombers carried out the attack on Musharraf's motorcade when the General was on his way to his official residence from Islamabad.
Investigators have got "important clues" about the terrorists involved in the attack, Jamali told reporters in Parliament House.
He refused to divulge details, saying, "It is a very serious matter and Government is probing it."
