| | Tripura demands Bhutan-like operation in B'desh Saturday, December 27 2003 14:15 Hrs (IST) Agartala:
Tripura Assembly has passed an unanimous resolution demanding Bhutan-like operation in Bangladesh and that the Centre take up the matter with Dhaka so that its soil is not used for anti-Indian activity.
The resolution, moved by ruling Communist Party of India (CPM) member Sudhan Das in the house yesterday (Dec 26, 2003), proposed that the Centre "seriously" take up with Dhaka the matter of the demolition of the ultras' base camps in that country like Bhutan.
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, also in charge of the home portfolio, participating in the discussion said there were at least 50 camps of Tripura insurgents in Bangladesh.
If Indian rebels aided by Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan were allowed to use Bangladesh soil, its people would face threats similar to those experienced in Bhutan, he said.
"We want Bangladesh Government to remember the contribution of the people of India, particularly of Tripura and West Bengal during its liberation war and take positive steps in destroying the rebels' camps," Sarkar said.
Tripura Government, he assured, would not pose any problem if any insurgent group wanted safe passage for negotiations with the Centre.
The Tripura insurgents had been repeatedly appealed to by the State Government to give up arms and come for negotiations, he added.
