| | 'Musharraf assures fool-proof security for Vajpayee' Saturday, December 27 2003 18:36 Hrs (IST) New Delhi:
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has assured that "fool-proof" security arrangements will be made for Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and other leaders attending the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Summit from January 4 to 6.
"President Musharraf says he is the target and not other leaders...he has said he is making fool-proof arrangements. Prime Minister is respected leader of SAARC and Asia and will be attending it," Foreign Secretary Shashank told reporters in New Delhi today (Dec 27, 2003).
He was replying to a question on how safe it was for the Prime Minister to travel to Pakistan in the wake of the recent assassination bids on Musharraf.
"Naturally, everybody has to be concerned about the safety of the leaders. India has made a commitment to carry forward SAARC," he said.
Noting that incidents of terrorism have increased within Pakistan, which has "become the epicentre of terrorism all over the world", he said "but that does not mean security cannot be taken care of".
Islamabad, he said, has stated that it was making full security arrangements for all the visiting leaders.
Asked whether New Delhi was satisfied with the security arrangements in Islamabad, he quipped, "We will tell you when we come back."
